Book Formatting Service: Process, Pricing & What You Get

Your cover is what readers see first. Your interior is what makes them stay. Badly formatted books build quiet distrust on every page, while professionally typeset interiors signal quality and earn five-star reviews. This guide shows exactly how my formatting service works, with nothing hidden.

A typeset interior spread with drop cap, running header, and clean page flow, built to pass KDP and IngramSpark review

If you are an indie author, your interior matters as much as your cover. A beautifully designed book with a messy interior tells readers one thing, that the rest of the work was cut corners too. Right margins, consistent spacing, clean chapter breaks, and a proper table of contents are the small signals that make a book feel professional from page one to the last.

This page is the complete, no-fluff overview of my book formatting service. I cover the process, the pricing, the realistic timeline, the revision policy, the exact files you receive, and how to prepare a brief that gets us to a finished interior fast. Read it top to bottom, or jump to the section you need using the table of contents.

"A great cover earns the click. A clean interior earns the review." That is the standard every formatting project here is built to.

What You Get

Every formatting project is built to do four things: read like a real book, pass printer review on the first upload, look right at every trim size, and hand you files you can publish anywhere. Concretely, here is what lands in your project:

  • Reflowable ePub for ebook. Built to display cleanly on Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, and every other major store, with consistent fonts, spacing, and chapter navigation.
  • Print-ready PDF with bleeds in CMYK at 300 DPI, sized to your chosen trim with the correct margins, gutter, and spine width calculated for you.
  • Editable source file in Word or InDesign, so the manuscript stays in your hands and editable for future editions.
  • Unlimited revisions on every package and a 3-day first sample so you see a real result quickly, not a wireframe.
  • KDP and IngramSpark approval, guaranteed. If a printer rejects a file, I fix it free.

The Formatting Process, Step by Step

The workflow is deliberately simple. Most of the heavy lifting happens before I open InDesign, in the briefing. The cleaner your manuscript, the faster we reach an interior you cannot wait to publish.

1

Briefing & Manuscript Upload

You send your manuscript (Word, Google Docs, or InDesign file), your cover if you have one, your chosen trim size, and any style references. We confirm the genre, the page-count target, and any special elements such as images, tables, or footnotes.

2

First Sample in 3 Business Days

You receive a fully formatted sample of the front matter and the first chapter within three business days of the project start. It is a real, finished layout, so you can react to something concrete and request changes before the rest is typeset.

3

Unlimited Revisions on the Sample

We refine together. Adjustments cover fonts, spacing, margins, chapter styles, header and footer style, drop caps, and any other layout detail. We keep going until the sample is exactly how you want the whole book to feel.

4

Full Manuscript Format & Delivery

Once the sample is approved, I format the remaining chapters and produce the final reflowable ePub, the print-ready PDF, and the editable source file, then deliver everything securely via WeTransfer with a KDP and IngramSpark approval guarantee.

3 business days

to your first formatted sample, with unlimited revisions after. A rush option is available for an additional fee if your launch is close.

Revisions & How Many Passes

This is the part authors worry about most, so here it is plainly: revisions are unlimited on every formatting package. You are not capped at two or three rounds. We keep refining margins, fonts, chapter styling, and any layout element until the interior looks exactly the way you want it.

On the first sample, I typeset the front matter and the opening chapter as a real layout, not a rough draft. That gives you something concrete to react to. If the spacing, fonts, or chapter feel is off, we adjust before I touch the rest of the manuscript. Once you approve the sample, the same style carries through the whole book, so revisions on the back half are usually small.

Pro tip

The fastest path to an interior you love is a tight brief and a clear style reference. Send two or three books whose interiors you admire (with chapter-page screenshots if you can) and revisions on the first sample move quickly.

Timeline & Turnaround

Most authors ask "how long?" before "how much?". Here is the honest timing:

  • First sample: 3 business days from project start, a fully typeset front matter and first chapter.
  • Sample revisions: usually turned around within a day or two per round depending on scope.
  • Full delivery: most manuscripts complete within 7 to 14 business days after sample approval, depending on length and complexity.
  • Rush service: available for an additional fee if your launch is close.
  • Book ahead: I recommend starting 2 to 3 weeks before your launch or ad campaign so revisions have room.
  • Availability: I work 24/7, so you can reach out anytime and I will reply as soon as possible.
  • Flexible pause: if your editing runs long, you can pause the project and resume when the manuscript is ready.

Files & Formats You Receive

You walk away with everything you need to publish in every format, with no conversions or guesswork required:

Reflowable ePub

For Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, and every major ebook store. Clean navigation, consistent fonts, and proper chapter breaks.

Print-Ready PDF

CMYK at 300 DPI, with bleeds, margins, and spine width calculated to your printer's exact specification.

Source File

Word or InDesign source so the interior stays editable for future editions, reissues, or volume 2.

Spine Mockup

A photorealistic 3D render of your finished spine for ads, social posts, and series previews.

A few technical notes that matter for print:

  • Bleed is the extra edge area that prevents white strips after the printer cuts. Every PDF I deliver includes the bleed your printer requires.
  • Margins and gutter are set to safe, industry-standard values for your chosen trim size so text never disappears into the binding.
  • Spine width is calculated precisely from your final page count and paper type, then synced with your cover designer so the wrap lines up.
  • Fonts are embedded in the print PDF, and the ePub uses a safe system-font fallback that renders consistently across every device.

Genres & Complexity

Every genre and every manuscript has its own interior conventions, and readers feel when those conventions are respected. I format within the standards of your category while still finding a fresh, readable style that makes your book feel at home next to the bestsellers in your category.

Common manuscript types and how I handle them:

  • Standard fiction (novels, novellas, short story collections): clean body type, consistent chapter heads, widow and orphan control, and a properly built table of contents.
  • Non-fiction and memoir: front matter built for the genre, including copyright page, dedication, author bio, and foreword sections laid out to industry standards.
  • Cookbooks and image-heavy titles: image placement, captions, sidebars, and section breaks custom scoped to the number and complexity of the visuals.
  • Academic and reference: footnotes, endnotes, indexes, bibliographies, tables, and graphs handled precisely and quoted within your project scope.
  • Poetry and literary collections: careful attention to stanza spacing, line breaks, and the rhythm of the page.

Non-fiction or any book with images, tables, or footnotes needs a custom quote because the work scales with the number and complexity of those elements. Send the manuscript details and I will reply with a flat quote within 24 hours.

Rights & Ownership

You own the final formatted files outright, forever. A few practical points worth knowing up front:

  • You own the final files. The ePub, the print-ready PDF, and the source file are all yours to use, sell, archive, or hand to a publisher with no ongoing fees.
  • Fonts are licensed, not sold. Most formatting is done with open-licensed or printer-safe fonts so the output renders identically on any device. If a custom font is required, I will confirm licensing and use it inside your file without passing licensing costs to you.
  • Your supplied images. If your manuscript includes photos or artwork, you must own the rights and supply them at 300 DPI for print. I will not lift images from the web.
  • Editable source file. The Word or InDesign source means you or any future editor can update the manuscript for a new edition without starting over.

File Delivery & Ongoing Support

  • Delivery: final files arrive via a secure WeTransfer link to your email. Download and back them up promptly, since the link expires within 3 to 7 days.
  • Approval guarantee: if KDP or IngramSpark raises a technical issue, I fix it at no extra cost.
  • Archive: project files are kept for 30 days. If your page count shifts slightly before printing, I adjust the spine free within that window.
  • Communication: all feedback and revisions are tracked over email so there is a clear written record.

How to Write a Brief That Hits

The single biggest factor in a fast, great result is the brief. You do not need design knowledge, just the right inputs. Include:

  • Final manuscript. A clean Word or Google Docs file, or an InDesign file if you already have one. If you are still editing, send the cleanest version you have and we can pause when the final draft lands.
  • Trim size. Pick from the KDP and IngramSpark menu (5x8, 5.5x8.5, 6x9, and so on). 6x9 is the most common for fiction. Not sure? The brief form has a one-click default.
  • Cover if you have one. The spine width is calculated from the manuscript's page count, and it needs to match the cover's spine to line up in print.
  • Style references. Two or three books whose interiors you love, ideally with chapter-page screenshots so I can see the font, spacing, and chapter feel you want.
  • Must-haves and avoid-at-all-costs. Drop caps or no drop caps, justified text or ragged right, scene breaks as ornaments or blank lines, and any specific font preferences.

Not sure yet? That is fine. Fill the formatting order form with what you have and we will refine the brief together before any typesetting work begins.

Why Work With Nabin

An interior is only as good as the person typesetting it. A few reasons authors choose this studio:

  • 10+ years and 500+ book projects across nearly every genre, for indie authors and small to mid-sized publishers alike.
  • Cover design in-house. If you also need a cover, the same studio handles your wrap and interior together so the spine, bleeds, and trim all line up on the first try.
  • Global, digital-first studio. I collaborate with writers from the US, UK, Australia, and beyond, in fluent English.
  • Current with specs. I stay on top of KDP, IngramSpark, Apple Books, and Kobo requirements so files are rarely rejected on the first upload.
  • Fast and low-risk. A 3-day first sample plus unlimited revisions means you are never stuck with an interior you do not love.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the book formatting process work?

It starts with a briefing where you share your manuscript (Word or Google Doc), trim size, and any style preferences. You receive a fully formatted first chapter within 3 business days. After your feedback, I format the rest of the manuscript and deliver a reflowable ePub and a print-ready PDF plus the source file, with unlimited revisions until you are 100 percent satisfied.

How much does book formatting cost?

Formatting starts at $99 for manuscripts up to 50,000 words, $149 for 50,000 to 100,000 words, $199 for 100,000 to 150,000 words, and $249 for 150,000 to 200,000 words. Manuscripts over 200,000 words or non-fiction with images, tables, or footnotes need a custom quote. All prices are in USD, every package includes unlimited revisions, and there are zero hidden fees.

How long does formatting take?

Your formatted first sample is delivered within 3 business days of project start. A complete manuscript usually takes 7 to 14 business days depending on length and complexity. A rush service is available for an additional fee if your launch is close.

How many revisions are included?

Unlimited revisions on every package. We refine margins, fonts, spacing, headers, footers, chapter styles, and any other layout detail until the interior looks exactly the way you want it.

What file formats will I receive?

You get a reflowable ePub (works on Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, and every major ebook store), a print-ready PDF with bleeds in CMYK at 300 DPI built to your printer's exact spec, the Word or InDesign source file, and a 3D render of the spine for marketing.

Can you format non-fiction with images, tables, or footnotes?

Yes. Image-heavy non-fiction, cookbooks, academic titles, and any book with tables, graphs, footnotes, or endnotes needs a custom quote because the work scales with the number and complexity of those elements. Send your manuscript details and I will reply with a flat quote within 24 hours.

What trim sizes do you support?

Every standard KDP and IngramSpark trim size including 5x8, 5.25x8, 5.5x8.5, 6x9 (the most common), 6.14x9.21, 7x10, 7.44x9.69, 8x10, 8.5x8.5 (square), 8.5x11, and custom sizes. The spine width is calculated precisely from your final page count and paper type.

Who owns the formatted files?

You own the final ePub, PDF, and source files outright. You can upload them to any store, sell direct, or hand them to a publisher. The licensed fonts I use stay on my side, but the formatted file is fully yours to use and archive.

What if KDP or IngramSpark rejects my interior?

File approval is guaranteed. If a printer raises a technical issue, I fix it at no extra cost. I stay current with KDP and IngramSpark specifications, so rejections are rare, but you are covered either way.

Can you format my book if I already have a cover?

Absolutely. Most authors order formatting after their cover is already final, which is the recommended order. I just need the cover file (front, spine, and full wrap if your print edition is a wrap) so the spine width, back cover, and overall trim line up perfectly with the interior.

Do I need to provide a cover first?

No. You can start formatting with or without a finished cover. The interior is built to your chosen trim size, and the spine width is calculated from the manuscript's final page count. If your cover comes later, I will update the spine width free of charge if it changes.

How do I start a formatting project?

Fill out the order form or send me a quick email with your word count, trim size, and any style references. I will reply with a flat quote, the next steps, and a manuscript upload link. You can also book 2 to 3 weeks before your launch to allow time for revisions.
