What is Bookland EAN-13?

Bookland EAN-13 is a specific standard barcode style used globally for books. It starts with prefixes like 978 or 979, followed by your 10-digit ISBN, and ends with a calculated check digit to verify scan integrity.

The Price Add-On (EAN-5)

The 5-digit extension (EAN-5) encodes the retail price of your book. For USD prices, it starts with a 5. For example, 51999 indicates a price of $19.99 USD. Standard scanners use this to automatically ring up the correct amount.

Vector PDF vs. EPS

For offset printing and print-on-demand services (KDP/Ingram), vector files like PDF or EPS are highly recommended. Unlike PNGs, vector formats scale infinitely without blurring, ensuring crisp lines and perfect readability at the register.

Do I need a separate barcode for paperback and hardcover?

Yes. Each format of your book (paperback, hardcover, epub) requires a unique ISBN. Therefore, you must generate a different barcode for each version.

Where do I obtain an ISBN number?

In the United States, Bowker (myidentifiers.com) is the official agency. In the United Kingdom, it is Nielsen. Some platforms like KDP offer free ISBNs, but Bowker allows you to own your imprint name.

What color should the barcode be?

Barcodes should always be printed in solid black ink on a solid white background. Standard laser scanners use red lights and need high contrast to differentiate bars from spaces; red, yellow, or pastel inks will fail to scan.

What size should my barcode be?
