Why Thumbnail Size Matters

  • Click-Through Rate: Covers with high-contrast typography receive up to 3x more clicks in search results.
  • Mobile Dominance: Over 60% of Amazon browsing happens on smartphones, where your cover is just 46 px wide.
  • Direct Sales Impact: A blurry thumbnail signals an unprofessional book and kills conversions instantly.
  • Genre Recognition: Readers snap-judge genre by visual cues. If your cover is muddled at search scale, they scroll past.

Thumbnail Checklist

  • Title is readable at the Search Result size (96 px)
  • High-contrast typography — light text on dark bg or vice versa
  • One dominant focal point — avoid cluttered compositions
  • Cover pops on the shelf against grey competitor placeholders
  • Image is minimum 1600 px tall for Amazon quality standards
  • Genre mood is instantly recognisable at tiny sizes

Pro Tips for a Thumbnail-Ready Cover

Hierarchy-First Typography

Your title must be the single dominant text element. Use a bold, clean typeface at maximum contrast. Subtitle and author name should be significantly smaller — they matter at the product page, not at search-result scale.

Maximum Contrast Ratio

Aim for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 between your text and the background. Black on white, white on deep navy, or bright gold on black all work. Pastel-on-pastel looks elegant at full size but disappears at 96 px.

Single Focal Point

Every successful thumbnail has one clear "hero" element — a face, a weapon, a symbol. Busy compositions with multiple competing elements collapse into visual noise at small sizes. Simplify ruthlessly.

Genre-Signal Color

Readers pre-qualify books by color. Dark, muted palettes signal thriller or dark fantasy. Bright pastels signal romance or cozy mystery. When your thumbnail matches genre expectations, clicks increase dramatically.

Upload at High Resolution

Amazon recommends a minimum of 2,560 pixels on the longest side. Higher resolution ensures that even when Amazon compresses and resizes, your cover retains sharpness, color accuracy, and edge definition.

Test, Don't Guess

Never judge your cover only at full resolution. Always check the 96 px Search Result size — this is the exact size most Amazon shoppers see first. If they cannot read your title there, you are losing sales.

Is Your Cover Failing the Thumbnail Test?

Most self-published authors only discover their cover is illegible after it goes live. Don't lose those clicks. Let Nabin design a cover built for every size.

Common Questions

What Amazon thumbnail sizes does this tool simulate?
This tool simulates four key sizes: Mobile List (46 × 70 px), Desktop Search Result (96 × 146 px), Product Detail Page (160 × 243 px), and Hero/Zoom (260 × 395 px). These match the actual pixel dimensions Amazon renders your cover image across different views and devices.
Is my cover image uploaded to any server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser using the FileReader API. Your cover image is never uploaded to or stored on any server. It stays completely private on your device.
What resolution should I upload my cover at?
Upload at the highest resolution you have. Amazon recommends a minimum of 1,600 px on the shortest side, with the ideal being 2,560 × 1,600 px or higher. This tool will still work at any resolution, but you will see a warning if your image is below the recommended threshold.
How is the brightness and saturation score calculated?
The tool samples your image via an HTML5 Canvas and reads the average RGB pixel values. Brightness is derived from the luminosity formula (0.299R + 0.587G + 0.114B). Saturation is calculated from the HSL colour model. Scores are contextual guides — your genre will determine what is "ideal."
My cover looks fine at large sizes but blurry at small. What should I do?
This is the most common cover problem. The solution is to redesign with thumbnail-first thinking: increase font weight, raise contrast, simplify the composition, and ensure the main title is large enough to read at 96 px. If you need help, start a cover project with Nabin.
